NCR is proud to name Andrew “Fireball” Burkhardt of Widener University as our Rugbee Co April Coach of the Month. A dedicated leader, mentor, and advocate for the growth of rugby, Coach Burkhardt has transformed Widener Rugby into one of the most competitive and respected small-college rugby programs in the country.
Taking over as head coach in 2015 with only a dozen players, Coach Fireball has spent the last decade building Widener Rugby from the ground up. Through tireless recruiting, personal investment, and strategic development, he’s led the team to numerous victories and milestones—most recently earning his 46th career win and guiding the team to an undefeated 15s season and a spot in the NCR Challenge Bowl Championship Final.
A proud Widener alumnus and former player, Coach Burkhardt gives his all—donating his coaching salary back to the program, traveling hours to practices, and holding Zoom film sessions after long workdays. A father of two and full-time professional, Coach Fireball is the embodiment of sacrifice and passion. As one nominator shared: “Coach Burkhardt, at his core, is the culture of Widener Rugby… If Coach could lace them up and get out there with you, he most certainly would.”
Under his guidance, nearly all Widener players begin as complete newcomers to rugby. Yet, with Andrew’s patient instruction and innovative coaching strategies, those same players grow into confident, competitive athletes. Widener Rugby has earned MARC Championships, national tournament bids, and a reputation as one of the most welcoming and successful programs for first-time rugby players.
Coach Burkhardt’s philosophy is rooted in adaptability, accountability, and growth. “Clock in,” his team mantra, reinforces that each player has a job to do, on and off the field. He builds lifelong relationships, instills discipline, and inspires players to represent not just their school, but the sport itself with pride and integrity.
