Southern Nazarene University’s rugby program is thriving, and at its heart is Coach Aric Gilliland, our February Coach of the Month. Since launching the program in 2021, Gilliland has built a powerhouse, leading both men’s and women’s teams to remarkable success.
His impressive record includes multiple NCR LoneStar Bowl appearances, Collegiate Rugby Championship 7s trips, and, most notably, three consecutive women’s 15s postseason appearances, culminating in a 2024 appearance in the DI National final. The women’s 7s team also boasts three consecutive CRC 7s Premier Division trips, with a bowl bracket championship in 2024.
Gilliland’s dedication extends far beyond coaching. He maintains the fields, mows the lawn, and treats his players like family. His hands-on approach sets the standard, demonstrating the commitment he expects. His background as a teacher and coach, coupled with his leadership in Rugby Oklahoma, has prepared him to build a program rooted in camaraderie and accountability.
Of his nomination, Gililand said, “I couldn’t be more blessed to be able to do what I do for a living! Working with student athletes and their families in pursuit of becoming our best selves is a ministry I will never get tired of! SNU is a tremendous university and the support our administration demonstrates for its coaches, players, and families is absolutely exemplary! I’m honored that I have been nominated for Coach of the Month!”
