The US Women’s Rugby Foundation (USWRF) supported two of the NCR Women’s All-American Coaches for their intrasquad scrimmage that took place July 11. The foundation provided financial support for two coaches, Matja Saarenheimo-VanderHorst and Olivia Baptiste, to travel and take part in the development camp.
“The NCR All American experience provided by USWRF was a great opportunity for reflection as I continue my journey and growth as a coach,” said Matja Saarenheimo-VanderHorst.
“The senior staff had a wealth of knowledge, and they created an encouraging learning environment for both the athletes and the developing coaches. I’m grateful for the conversations I was able to have—not only about the sport of rugby, but also about how to help a team develop a strong culture and identity.”
The USWRF was founded in 2005, is managed by an all-women volunteer board, and is committed to the growth of girls’ and women’s rugby through the advancement of coaches, referees, and administrators.
“Getting to attend the NCR All-American camp supported by USWRF was wonderful as I was able to develop further in my rugby knowledge and experience in the sport. It was a privilege to learn from the many great coaches part of the staff, as well as the players as I began my coaching journey,” said Olivia Baptiste.
“USWRF means a lot to me simply as a player and alum of Brown University, for its commitment to honor our late and great coach, Kathy Flores. Greatly indebted to all her achievements, but especially those of which aim to push and advocate for women’s sports. And thus, I’m very grateful to be supported by USWRF to step into coaching and join the movement for visibility of women’s rugby in the U.S. while keeping Coach Kathy’s spirit alive.
“The NCR All-American camp was an amazing kickoff in my journey as a coach due to the curated positive, upbeat environment and constant flow of communication. I cannot wait for the next step and coaching opportunity, and what I will bring to the table learned from my time in Madison!” said Baptiste.
“The world of rugby is growing, and I’m excited to be a part of its future. Experiences like this continue to help me grow as a coach, and I’m looking forward to applying what I’ve learned to future opportunities,” added Saarenheimo-VanderHorst.
