In just two seasons, MaKayla Lowe Richesin has transformed the women’s rugby program at Lander University into one of the fastest-rising teams in collegiate rugby, earning recognition as the April Rugbee.Co Coach of the Month.
After inheriting a young rebuilding squad that finished 6–14 with a -116 point differential, Richesin led Lander to an incredible turnaround in year two. The Bearcats finished 19–7 with a .731 winning percentage and a +433 point differential while reaching new heights in NCR Division I-AA competition.
Originally from Athens, Richesin began playing rugby in high school before continuing her career at Life University, where she became a two-time All-American under Head Coach Rosalind Chou. Following graduation, she coached at Queens University before taking over at Lander.
Players, families, and supporters consistently praise Richesin’s passion, positivity, and leadership. From rebuilding a roster with walk-on athletes and first-time players to creating a culture centered on accountability, teamwork, and growth, she has quickly built more than just a successful team, she has built a family.
Richesin’s impact extends beyond wins and losses. Multiple Lander athletes have advanced to the U23 Southeast Reapers program, where she also serves as an assistant coach after previously winning a national championship as a player in 2022.
As Lander Rugby continues its rise on the national stage, Richesin’s vision, energy, and commitment to student-athlete development continue to shape the future of the program.
