Meaghan Schmitt, a native of Milwaukee, WI, has dedicated herself to rugby through her roles as both a player and a coach. Growing up around the game, with her parents coaching women’s collegiate rugby, Meaghan developed a deep passion for the sport. She began her playing career at Catholic Memorial High School, where she excelled and captained the Wisconsin U19 Selectside.
After high school, Meaghan shifted her focus to coaching and administration, serving as Manager for St. Thomas Rugby from 2016 to 2019. In February 2020, she became the Head Coach of St. Thomas Rugby, guiding the team through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. Under her leadership, St. Thomas achieved historic milestones, including a 2nd place finish at the 2024 CRC 7s in Division III and the club’s first-ever regional appearance in 15s. She also spearheaded record recruitment and fundraising efforts, which allowed the program to expand and gain access to on-campus practice facilities.
In addition to her work at St. Thomas, Meaghan serves as the Technical Director for the Minnesota Rugby Union, overseeing the development of rugby programs across the state, enhancing player pathways, and coaching education.
Meaghan’s coaching style focuses on developing not only rugby skills but also well-rounded individuals. Known as the “rugby mom” by her players, she fosters a supportive, accountable, and motivating environment. Her leadership has brought St. Thomas Rugby to new heights, with the team qualifying for NCR 7s Nationals for the first time in the club’s history and advancing to regional 15s play.
Meaghan’s commitment to her players and her tactical mastery have made her a key figure in the growth of rugby at St. Thomas and beyond. Her continued success and impact make her a deserving recipient of the Rugbee Coach of the Month award.
