Bupe Ngwashi has made a significant impact as the head coach of the University of Maryland women’s rugby team. Originally from Syracuse, NY, Bupe’s passion for rugby began at 14 while attending school in South Africa. Under the guidance of Coach Mike Cousins, he transitioned from a player focused on scoring to a leader who understood the intricacies of team dynamics.
When Bupe joined UMD in Spring 2024, he faced a team that had endured four consecutive losing seasons. Recognizing the need for a mindset shift, he instilled a culture of resilience and growth, encouraging players to view weaknesses as opportunities for improvement. His mantra, “go again,” served as a rallying cry for the team, reinforcing the importance of perseverance.
Bupe’s coaching approach emphasizes individualized feedback and support, fostering a strong sense of trust among players. He actively ensures that all team members have the necessary resources to succeed, often assisting those in need of equipment. This commitment has helped cultivate a passionate and dedicated team environment.
