National Collegiate Rugby is proud to recognize Amari Thompson from Ohio University as April’s Rugbee Student Leader of the Month! A standout both on and off the field, Amari exemplifies what it means to lead with heart, dedication, and vision.
Amari, a junior majoring in Political Science with a minor in Psychology, has been a force in the rugby community since her sophomore year of high school. Now serving as President of the Ohio University Women’s Rugby Team—after being Vice President in her second year—Amari has been instrumental in growing the team and fostering a welcoming, supportive environment for all players.
Under her leadership, volunteer hours have doubled, and the team has strengthened relationships with other clubs, advisors, and the broader community. Amari’s impact goes far beyond game days—she arranges the team’s schedule, leads practices, and ensures that every member feels seen and valued.
Her influence extends across campus as well. As the Incoming Managing Coordinator for Tour Guides and a Student Ambassador for the College of Arts and Sciences, Amari is constantly connecting people, building bridges, and lifting others up. Teammates describe her as a role model, motivator, and the glue that holds the team together. Her energy is infectious, her courage is inspiring, and her commitment never wavers.
“Amari makes me play without fear,” one teammate shared. “Because of the courage she plays with, I feel empowered to give my all.”
