Chris Smith

A dedicated third-year criminal justice major at SUNY Fredonia, Chris Smith exemplifies what it means to lead both on and off the field.

Chris chose Fredonia after being warmly welcomed by a member of the women’s rugby team during a campus visit. The camaraderie experienced with the men’s rugby players solidified his decision to join the team,and he quickly found his place within this supportive community. Now, as president of Blackhorse Rugby, Chris leads with passion and commitment, embodying the values of teamwork and inclusion that the sportrepresents.

In his role as president, Chris has gone above and beyond in recruiting new members and fostering a sense of belonging within the rugby community. He collaborates closely with the coaching staff to ensure players are engaged and educated about the sport, helping them develop both on and off the field.His leadership has not only strengthened the team but has also created a home for many students navigating college life away from their families.

Chris’s involvement extends beyond the rugby pitch. He actively participates in various school-led events such as “Fall Sweep” and “Move-In Day,” and he volunteers at a local animal shelter. He has spearheaded fundraising initiatives to support the club’s expenses,ensuring that players have the necessary resources for insurance, travel, and tournament fees. His ability to forge partnerships with local restaurants for fundraisers and banquets showcases his commitment to community engagement and collaboration.

As a captain, Chris is known for his strategic insights during games and his ability to inspire his teammates. His approachable nature encourages team members to share new ideas, fostering an environment where everyone feels valued and heard.
