National Collegiate Rugby (NCR) is the amateur athletic association for collegiate rugby in the United States, passionately dedicated to supporting and growing the sport. Overview

The Men's Competition Director is a pivotal leadership role within NCR, responsible for shaping and executing the national competition strategy for nearly 400 men’s clubs across Division I, Division I-AA, Division II, and Division III. This Director will collaborate closely with over 25 conference commissioners to manage a robust regular season, culminating in a dynamic national playoff structure. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, this position is instrumental in influencing the future strategy and driving the growth of college rugby. This role requires availability during normal business hours (Monday - Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm) and includes travel to key weekend tournaments and championships, as needed. This is a contract role with a salary range of $52,000 to $60,000.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategically lead and manage all facets of NCR men's 15s and 7s competitions, including developing and overseeing national playoff systems and championships.
  • Provide direct leadership, guidance, and support to over 25 conference commissioners and associated support staff.
  • Drive the growth and development of men's collegiate rugby, encompassing the communication and organization of existing clubs and the establishment of new ones.
  • Lead the selection and management process for Men's All-American recognition programs and the Fall 15s Coach’s Poll National Rankings.
  • Oversee and execute all National Playoffs, including managing timing, locations of regional qualifiers.
  • Lead the planning and designation of national 7s qualifying tournaments, and track qualified teams and at-large applications.
  • Collaborate closely with the Marketing Manager on promotional strategies, compelling storylines, and post-event reporting to enhance visibility for men's competitions.
  • Develop and refine competition regulations, bid packages, and forms (e.g., rosters, brackets, schedules, results) for men's events.
  • Support critical organizational functions, including policy review and implementation with the Eligibility team, and collaborating with the High Performance Director on All-Star competition structures.
  • Support the High Performance Manager in identifying players for the All American and Griffin touring sides.
  • Represent NCR in meetings and actively engage with key stakeholders, university officials, and community members on behalf of men's rugby.
  • Contribute to the annual competition budget and provide general support to the CEO, COO, and other NCR staff on various projects and initiatives.
  • Lead 1-2 cross-functional workstreams that support broader event management (i.e. trophies, equipment, etc.)
  • Champion men's member recognition programs (e.g., Player of the Month), coordinating with the Marketing Manager for approvals.
  • Drive the men’s strategic plan and actively participate in NCR’s broader proposition, member services and growth planning initiatives.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Sports Management, Sports Administration, Education, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive experience in sports administration, competition management, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing complex sporting events, playoffs, and championships.
  • Institutional knowledge of collegiate rugby, either as a player, coach, administrator, or a combination, is highly desirable.
  • Proven experience in staff or volunteer management and oversight.
  • Experience with budget contribution and management.
  • Experience with developing and implementing policies and procedures.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking and presentation abilities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively engage with a wide range of stakeholders, including college/university officials, coaches, athletes, volunteers and media.
  • Proficiency in Google applications (Doc, Slides and Sheets).
