Coast Guard made their fiery debut on December 6 in a 29-24 win against Vassar, securing their spot in the Division II final Sunday, December 7 in Houston.
Vassar started the match off strong 5-0 with a try from scrum-half Sophia Bailey in the match’s first 57 seconds. Coast Guard tied up the match 5-5 after some push and pull with a try from wing Avery Soca, assisted by hooker Jasmine Mendez.

The two sides played hard in the first half, not giving up any more points.
Coast Guard took the lead 19-5 in the second half with a penalty try for a dangerous tackle, followed by a try from Mendez and conversion by center Hazel Mitrik. Mitrik didn’t stop there, pushing her way into the try to bring the team up 24-5.
Vassar locked back in after an injury delay with center Rosalie Perkinson grounding the ball and wing Ava Rowland not only scoring the conversion, but the team’s following try. Increasing the score to 24-17.

Soca charged into the try once again, less than a minute after Rowland, maintaining their lead 29-17. Vassar closed out the game 29-24 with another try by wing Leah Dourmashkin and conversion from Rowland, but it unfortunately was not enough to seal the deal and take them to the final.
